Racing Basics
Entering Races by Race Type
Selecting the race type is crucial for your horse. There are distances for each race type in furlongs and different race types. You may race your horse at various distances and pay attention to the various ratings, meters and race form to determine what distance it prefers. As for the race types, let’s break those down:
Graded Stakes (I, II, III) — These are the high stakes races. They cost more to enter and the purses are bigger. Often these races include "added money" which is DD$ that Digital Downs adds to the race on top of purses built by entry fees. If you don’t have an 100+ rated horse, you probably want to stay away from these races. If you’re oozing confidence and ready for the big time with your high grade horse, get ready for some heart pumping screen time entertainment!
Stakes — Non Graded stakes are a tier lower than graded stakes. This is like a melting pot of horses with potential trying to determine if they’re good enough for Graded Stakes action.
Divisions - Division races are for horses with non winners of X races. Entry fees may increase the higher the division. Added money is often included in the race purse. Highly sought after races.
Allowance — Races with specific entry requirements such as “for horses with less than X wins” "for horse that haven't won in X days" as well as requirements that cause your horse to carry extra weight.
Maiden — Your horse can race in these until it gets its first win. Be careful as open maiden races could potentially have very high rated horses entered. They also could have very low rated horses entered. The beuty of a Maiden Special Weight.
Claimers — These are races where other stables may “claim” your horse for a specific tag price. At present, claiming race tiers are 5,000 to 100,000 DD$ so pay careful attention to the amounts. So only race here if you’re ok with your horse being sold at the claiming price! Many great opportunities and profitable horses can be found in claiming races.
Which Races Should I Enter?
This probably the toughest part for any new member to figure out. We believe that new stables should take a more practical approach until they know their way around the backside. One race we recommend NOT entering until you know the basics are maiden claimers on your first time starters. There are a few stables that can spot a great deal in claimers may also assume a new stable doesn't quite know what type of horse they have. So be cautious on FTS maiden claimers.
