  • Determining a horses preferred distance..

is it true that you can tell if a horse wants to sprint or route after its first workout...something to do with the meters and how they return. After about 6"game' seasons i am yet to come to grips with this.I just work this out as i go...

I feel like after the first workout that I have a good feeling if a horse will be a sprinter or router...just look at their 2f and 6f mark...it all depends how much stronger or weaker they are getting...I love a horse that shows a 22.5 and ends up at 109.2...shows the horse is gettting stronger as it goes...this horse should be stronger as a router or in a smaller field very useful as a sprinter where it will not get blocked.more later ,virus just hit me

If you calculate the speed at which the horse is traveling over each of the 2f splits in a 6f work, then just as John says you can see which ones start speeding up at the ends of their works. I find it easier to use "steady" than "push" though, since most seem to slow down late when on push. Also, Rory and some others can read the 5f work splits, but I have a hard time unless I use 6 or more. So you will see a lot of mine work 6f steady. I keep spreadsheets of the work splits too because I hope in time it will help me see how a horse compares to others I have had in the past. Happy to share anytime, just PM.
