  • Senior Racing

I have rather a lot of senior horses. I have kept them especially to race but also get 10 runs. I had 3 races cancelled the other day because of lack of numbers. What I would like to know is what other stables are doing with their seniors.

1/ Are you paying the 30k fee just to send them to stud
2/ Are you killing them off
3/ Just keeping your top ones for graded races?
4/ Not even waiting for your horses to reach 4, and only playing with 2 and 3yr olds?

    Here is a example

Horse with preference for turf, distance ticked for 1 1/8 to 1 1/2, race type Allowance, Open Allowance, Division and Stakes.

From the 27th till the 1st July there are two races with entrants. 6 horses entered in a Grade 2 and 1 horse entered in a open allowance.

I don't understand why so few entries, thoughts and opinions appreciated

Breeding is preferred for 4 year olds that have peaked in ability mostly. Since it is basically half the cost than going to sales ring or public sales, most owners will try to breed their own homebreds. I have noticed that most older horses are geldings and claimers who still can earn income. I think it will be better next season as many will try to keep older active horses.

4 & up racing should be in full force but obviously it isn't yet. I have a decent amount of 4 & up that I keep entered, but often they don't fill. If we keep the 4 yr old eliminator going it might help, but who knows?

The way i see it is. The game under new management is still young and the new sales ring is only going just over a year. Stables are only starting to get settled in and it will be another season or 2 by the seniors are in full flight. This game is not a sprint. It takes time to build your stable and in fairness i believe the game will thrive over the next few seasons as from my personal experience the older the horses get the better some of them are getting. Its geared more towards older horses racing than younger 1s, but this all takes time. I have barns full of unraced 2 and 3 year olds. I know i will be racing lots of unraced 4 yr olds come next season but as the saying goes all good things come to those who wait. Lol I also agree with Candy the 4 yr old Elim will be a big help to get horses racing and like in real life some horses need time to mature and will improve but the sad fact is there is loads that wont train on. So my advice would be to hang on to any that dont seem to shine right now and see how they improve as they get older.
